Humane Society offering free rabies vaccinations

(Vero Beach, Florida) – The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County (HSVBIRC) is hoping to make rabies history by offering a free rabies vaccination with any pet exam or spay/neuter surgery through the end of September. This offer is available to anyone with a dog or cat four months of age or older.

Recognizing that rabies is a fatal disease that kills approximately 55,000 annually, the Humane Society is teaming up with the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) to vaccinate animals and educate the public about rabies prevention. Rather than honor World Rabies Day (WRD) on September 28 for just one day, The Humane Society is hoping their extended discounted vaccination program will keep a greater number of pets disease-free.

“Vaccinating your pet plays a critical role in keeping him or her and our community healthy,” said Maria Ramirez, The Humane Society’s Director of Animal Care. “It’s our intention to be proactive about rabies so that people and animals are safe,” she added. According to Ramirez, the shelter will also be providing the community with educational information about curbing the spread of rabies.

Pet exams are $28 while low-cost spay/neuter surgery fees are dependent on the species, sex and weight of the animal. Pets must have an appointment, be four months of age or older, on a leash or in a carrier and be in general good health. Copies of each pet’s previous veterinary records are helpful. To schedule an appointment or for more information call the shelter’s Animal Wellness Clinic at (772) 388-0801.
