Humane Society assists at May 19 event to help the homeless
(Vero Beach, Florida) - The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County (HSVBIRC) will be part of a team helping the homeless and their pets at the community’s first “Community Impact Gateway: Neighbors Helping Neighbors” event. While a variety of local organizations will be on hand to assist the more than 700 homeless individuals living in our county by offering health care screenings and services, The Humane Society will be providing their pets with free examinations, vaccinations, basic pet wellness procedures and appointments for free spay/neuter services.
“Neighbors Helping Neighbors” will be held on Saturday, May 19 from 9:00.m.-2:00 p.m. at The Source, located at 1015 Commerce Avenue in Vero Beach. Participating organizations include: The Source, United Way, the American Red Cross, Indian River County Emergency Management, Indian River County VOAD, the Florida Department of Health, the Medical Reserve Corps, the Mental Health Association of Indian River County, Treasure Coast Community Health, NTB Group, Gifford Youth Activity Center and New Vision Eye Center.
“One of the fundamental aspects of The Humane Society's mission is to keep pets and people together. When local agencies work cooperatively, we’re helping our entire community – animals included,” Director of Animal Protective Services Ilka Daniel said. According to Daniel, the shelter will be able to provide a wide array of free services thanks to a generous grant from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
All donations of pet supplies such as pet food, dog leashes and dog collars as well as human items such as shoes, socks, diapers, clothing, hygiene products and batteries are being welcomed by all agencies. All donations can be dropped off at The Source on the day of the event. Individuals interested in volunteering can call the Indian River County Health Department at (772) 794-7479 for more information.
