Humane Society assists with emergency animal rescue
Shelter seeks public's help with donations

Vero Beach, Florida – The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River
County (HSVB&IRC) is providing shelter and care to 17 dogs recently removed
from a St. Lucie County, Florida "rescue" organization.

Authorities from St. Lucie County, The Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS) and
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA)
requested the help of HSVB & IRC after discovering more than 100 dogs and
cats confined in deplorable conditions last week at the Sanctuary Animal
Refuge. HSVB & IRC staff helped care for all of the animals on-site last
Wednesday and Thursday and then transported 17 dogs of various breeds back
to Indian River County on Saturday afternoon.

"Our shelter is committed to helping whenever we can," HSVB & IRC Director
of Animal Care Maria Ramirez said. Ramirez's response team consisted of a
veterinarian as well as several staff and volunteers trained to help animals
during disasters. Veterinary technicians from St. Francis Animal Hospital in
Vero Beach also provided emergency medical care.

Although all of the dogs have received preliminary veterinary examinations,
it may be several weeks before they can be placed for adoption. "Our primary
goal is to keep the animals comfortable and put them on the road to
recovery," Ramirez explained.

The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County is requesting
monetary donations as well as donated supplies such as blankets, sheets and
towels to help offset expenses. Monetary donations can be made by calling
(772) 388-3331 ext. 26 and donations of supplies can be brought to the
shelter, located at 6230 77th St., Vero Beach.
